ADA: The Americans with Disabilities Act

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted on July 26, 1990. Its purpose is to provide broad anti-discrimination protections for all persons with physical and mental impairments that substantially limit one or more major life activities. The Act covers employment, public services, public accommodations and services operated by private entities, and telecommunications relay services.

The City of Bloomington's Human Services Division has staff who can assist you in understanding the guidelines and regulations that are part of the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you are faced with any of the following, give us a call:

You, or someone you know, believe you have been discriminated against because of a disability.
You are building or renovating a publicly used building in the City of Bloomington and you want to make sure the ADA guidelines for accessibility are met.
You are a concerned citizen who believes a public or private entity is not accessible.
You have general questions about the ADA guidelines.
